Unlike most other senses, these signals initially bypass the thalamus, the brain's primary sensory relay. From the olfactory bulb, they project directly to regions including the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the entorhinal cortex, a gateway to the hippocampus, where memories are formed and organized. This uniquely direct pathway helps explain why scent can evoke memories and emotions with such immediacy. Although olfactory information is ultimately processed by the brain's olfactory cortex, its early connection with these emotional and memory-related regions makes fragrance unlike any other sensory experience.
